“IT PROBABLY NEEDS A good cleaning,” Rick said as they surveyed the front of Mrs. Arnold’s shop twenty minutes later.

Kaylee stepped up and peeked through the front window. It was a tiny place. Two hair dryers, two sinks and two chairs. Rick joined her to look inside. “I wonder if there’d be enough business to make it worthwhile.”

“Mommy said I need a haircut,” Molly said.

Rick glanced down at Molly. “She did, huh?”

“She said I look like a muffin.”

Rick and Kaylee looked at each other and then they both turned to Molly who had her hands cupped around her face and was peering in the bottom half of the window.

“A muffin?” Rick asked.

“A raggedy muffin. That’s what she said.”

Rick and Kaylee exchanged grins. “A ragamuffin.” He ruffled Molly’s hair. “You probably could use a trim, Raggedy Muffin.”

Molly giggled as they turned away from the shop for the short stroll back to the station. “I can cut her hair if you want me to,” Kaylee informed Rick softly.

Molly, of course, heard every word. “It’s okay if Kaylee cuts my hair, right, Daddy?” “Sure, if she wants to.”

“She can cut yours, too. Mommy said you looked like you hadn’t had a haircut in months.”

“She did, huh?”

“But you’re not her ’sponsibility anymore so she wasn’t going to remind you.”

“Gee, that was nice of her.” Rick grinned at Kaylee. “Anything else Mommy said that I should know about?”

Molly slid a sideways glance in Kaylee’s direction. “I forget.”

Rick cleared his throat. “We can walk over and say hi to Miss Emma if you want to.”

“Let’s do that!” Molly jiggled Rick’s hand. “She always gives me orange suckers.”

Together they made their way down the street, turned the corner and paused before a neat blue house in the middle of the block. After several minutes an older woman in a pale pink housedress answered Rick’s knock. The expression of discomfort on her face was immediately replaced by a smile when she recognized her visitors. “Rick Braddock, I do declare.” She opened the screen door in welcome. “And this can’t be Molly, can it?”

Molly slid her hand into Rick’s and smiled up at Miss Emma while she nodded vigorously.

“Well, to what do I owe this pleasure? Come in, come in.”

She gestured them forward into a cozy living room. A television set was tuned to a soap opera. Kaylee felt sort of awkward, unsure how she’d come to be here. She had no plans to stay in Perrish, and no money with which to buy the local beauty salon. Why then had she not demurred when Rick suggested a visit to Miss Emma?

“This is a friend of ours, Miss Emma,” Rick said. “Kaylee Walsh. Kaylee’s a hairstylist. We were admiring your salon.”

Miss Emma fixed a keen gaze on Kaylee. “Not much to admire there any more, I’m afraid. Place has been closed for almost two years.”

“It doesn’t look too bad,” Kaylee assured her. “Except for the dust.” Miss Emma’s hair was frazzled and untended. How Kaylee wished she could offer to remedy that.
